Shawn Barnes

Education and Experience
Dr. Shawn Barnes has been in clinical practice since graduating chiropractic school in 2013. He earned his Doctorate in Chiropractic and a Master’s in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Western States. Prior to starting his chiropractic training, Dr. Barnes earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Southern California and then spent two years at the University of Oregon taking pre-med courses.
In addition to his work for AOE Chiropractic, Dr. Barnes also practices in Salem at Willamette Valley Wellness and also works for the University of Western States as a Sports Medicine Clinical Instructor.
Specialties and Certifications

Dr. Barnes became a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®) in 2016. This specialty training and experience aids Dr. Barnes in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. and has led to him working with athletes from various levels, ranging from weekend warriors to professional athletes.
While Dr. Barnes works with athletes of any sort, as a former baseball player, there is a special place in his heart for his baseball athletes.

Dr. Barnes became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in 2019. This specialty training is for professionals train athletes using the most up to date scientifically available knowledge with the goals of maximizing athletic performance and minimizing risk of injury.
This certification is also helpful when integrating with athletic programs and strength coaches as it offers a common framework for providing athletes with the best all-around care and training.

Dr. Barnes has trained with the Performing Art Medicine Association (PAMA) to apply his existing knowledge and skills to better support the performing artist. This training focuses on using assessment and treatment techniques to better address the unique demands and art-specific health concerns of the performing artist (dancer, instrumentalist, vocalist, and actor).
Dr. Barnes has personal experience with music; he plays trombone and has performed with various ensembles, even marching with the USC Marching Band while in college. Dr. Barnes also plays many other instruments, but now can most frequently be found singing and playing the guitar.

Esports Medicine is a budding field of medicine that focuses on the health and well-being of esports athletes. These are individuals who dedicate long hours training and competing in video game tournaments. Like traditional athletes and performing artists, this population has a specific set of medical needs that should be addressed to achieve peak performance and maintain their health.
Dr. Barnes has done specialty training with the Esports Health and Performance Institute (EHPI) which has built upon his experience to better address the unique demands of esports athletes, streamers, and casual gamers.
Personal
Dr. Barnes grew up in southern California and moved to Salem, Oregon the summer before starting high school. After living in Los Angeles, Eugene, and Portland, he and his wife have settled back into Salem to raise their two children and stay close to family.
